Local Services Ads vs Google Search: where trades should spend first

Dave Mathew·September 22, 2026·12 min read
KEY TAKEAWAYS
  • LSA usually wins on cost per lead for "near me" emergency work.
  • Search wins on control and on high-value, specific jobs.
  • Most trades should launch both, with tracking in place first.

If you run a trade business and you're deciding where to put your first ad budget, the question usually comes down to two products: Local Services Ads and regular Google Search ads. They show up on the same results page, they're managed in related tools, and they're often confused. They work very differently.

What each one actually is

Local Services Ads sit at the very top of the page with a verified badge, your star rating and a call button. You pay when someone contacts you, not when they click. Search ads sit just below, look like regular results with a "Sponsored" label, and charge per click.

Local Services Ads

Built for calls. You choose the services and areas, set a weekly budget, and the platform decides when to show you. Control is limited, but so is the waste: you pay per lead.

Google Search

Built for control. You choose keywords, match types, ad copy, landing pages and bids. Done well, it's the most precise channel you can buy. Done badly, it's the fastest way to spend money on "DIY roof repair".

The cheapest lead isn't the goal. The cheapest booked job is.

What it costs

Neither channel has a fixed price. LSA charges per lead, and what a lead costs depends on your trade, your city and how many competitors want the same jobs. An emergency plumbing or roofing lead in a large metro costs far more than a handyman lead in a small town, and prices move with the season.

Search charges per click, so to compare it with LSA you have to turn clicks into leads. If a click costs $12 and one in ten visitors calls or fills in a form, each lead costs $120. Improve the landing page so one in six converts, and the same clicks now cost $72 per lead. That's the lever LSA doesn't give you: on Search, better pages and tighter keywords make every lead cheaper.

LSA has its own lever. You can dispute leads that shouldn't count, like calls from outside your service area, spam or job seekers, and approved disputes are credited back. Check the lead list every week.

Whichever you run, the number that matters isn't cost per lead. It's cost per booked job: what you spent, divided by the jobs that made it onto the calendar. A $90 Search lead that books half the time costs $180 per job. A $50 LSA lead that books one time in five costs $250. The cheaper lead lost.

CalloutBefore comparing the two, make sure calls from both are tracked. Otherwise you're comparing a channel you can see with one you can't.

The order we launch them in

  1. Tracking first. Call tracking and conversion tracking on every number and form.
  2. LSA second. Verification takes time, so start the paperwork early.
  3. Search third. Exact and phrase match on your highest-value services.
  4. Everything else later. Performance Max and Meta once the data is clean.

The verdict

For most trades the answer isn't one or the other. LSA catches the emergency, "near me" calls at a predictable price per lead, with a badge that builds trust before the phone rings. Search catches the bigger, planned jobs you want more of, like replacements, installs and remodels, and lets you choose exactly which searches you pay for.

Start with tracking so you can see what each channel books. Get LSA verification moving early, because it takes time. Launch Search on your highest-value services with exact and phrase match, and read the search terms every week. After 30 to 45 days, compare cost per booked job, not cost per lead, and move budget toward whichever is winning. Most of the time you'll keep both: they show up for different searches, and together they cover more of the work in your area.
